Abstract

ECHEVERRIARZA, María Paz; PEREDA, Cecilia  and  SILVEIRA, Yanet. Roles of principals and participation boards in Secondary Schools: tensions and practical suggestions. Pág. Educ. [online]. 2011, vol.4, n.1, pp.56-77. ISSN 1688-7468.

This article is framed within the conceptual discussion on the role of principals of secondary education schools, given the establishment of instances of public participation, such as the Participation Councils established by the Uruguayan General Law of Education no. 18 437. This research was nurtured by two complementary sources: a selection of specific literature and three Training Workshops with principals from twenty-three secondary schools from three Departments in Uruguay co-organized by the Education Sector of UNESCO Montevideo and the nation’s Council of Secondary Education. Within this framework, we identify some tensions related to the role of principals in the practice of calls for meetings and running of these spaces for participation in their schools; we also provide some clues for educational policies

Keywords : participation; principals; public high schools; Uruguay; Education Law.
