Abstract
LIO, Vanesa. Images of crime. From preventive use to media effectiveness of security cameras. Inmediac. Comun [online]. 2024, vol.19, n.1, pp.93-115. Epub June 01, 2024. ISSN 1510-5091. https://doi.org/10.18861/ic.2024.19.1.3506.
The article explores the media dissemination of images from video surveillance systems. It is assumed that images from security cameras were incorporated into the news and entertainment industry as part of a trend towards the spectacularisation of video surveillance. In this sense, and based on what is defined as an expressive function of this type of devices, the media are seen as actors in the networks linked to the public policies of urban monitoring. On the basis of interviews in a municipality in the province of Buenos Aires, we ask ourselves about the symbolic potential of security cameras and the use of images as a way of showing the "success" of public monitoring policies, and we focus on one of the media trends of the last years: reporting news from an aesthetic of the real that incorporates the audiovisual records of these devices. As a closure, we recover the public's perception of the dissemination of images and raise a question regarding the redefinitions of the effectiveness and efficiency of these devices based on the uses that arise in the implementation of public policies.
