Abstract

SEDANO, Mercedes. Left and right dislocation in Spain and Latin America. Lingüística [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.2, pp.153-189. ISSN 2079-312X.

In this article, I investigate the Left Dislocation (LD) (Ese libro Lo leí anoche) and Right Dislocation (RD) (Lo leí anoche, ese libro) structures, that topicalize a constituent (Ese libro), which is represented within the clause by a coreferential copy (lo), though it occurs outside the clause. My aim is to provide a better understanding of the function of both types of dislocation in spoken discourse, as well as to compare my results with those of other researches. The study takes into account various characteristics of the Left and Right dislocation in transcripts of the speech of eleven Spanish-speaking cities (5 in Spain and 6 in Spanish America). The results are similar to those of other studies; however, there are some differences which leave open the discussion of various matters of interest, especially the issue related to the syntactic function of the copy representing the topic

Keywords : Dislocation; topic; syntax; discourse.
