Abstract
MONTORO DEL ARCO, Esteban T.. THE FORMATION OF AN ECUADORIAN SYNTACTIC THEORY: CANON AND SOURCES IN SINTAXIS CASTELLANA (1899) BY JOSÉ NICOLÁS VACAS (1834-1905). Lingüística [online]. 2023, vol.39, n.1, pp.97-121. Epub June 01, 2023. ISSN 2079-312X. https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20230005.
This article analyzes the contribution of José Nicolás Vacas to the Ecuadorian grammatical theory of the second half of the 19th century, through the analysis of his treatise Sintaxis castellana extractada de varias obras, especialmente de la Gramática del Sr. Don Andrés Bello y dedicada á los estudiantes del Colegio Seminario de Ibarra (1899). The influence of the canonical sources of the time, as Andrés Bello, his only mentioned source, and the Royal Spanish Academy, is analyzed, as well as other extended teachers in Ecuadorian grammatical teaching at the turn of the century, such as the manuals of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The treatment of the concepts of syntax, concordance, regime, construction and proposition is specifically checked. The results allow to question the real influence of Bello in the doctrine of this author, as well as to discover the existence in this work of other non-canonical sources.
