Abstract

BERTOLA, Cecilia  and  CEDREZ, Maximiliana. A QUANTITATIVE APPROACH TO THE EXPRESSION OF FUTURITY IN URUGUAYAN SPANISH. Lingüística [online]. 2024, vol.40, e201.  Epub May 29, 2024. ISSN 2079-312X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2079-312x.20240001.

In this article, we analyze the differences in the distribution and interpretation of the synthetic future [-RÁ] and the periphrastic future [IR + a + Inf] in the oral and written registers of Spanish based on a quantitative logistic regression analysis. We worked with exploratory readings of the selected variables: form, corpus, context of uncertainty, temporal orientation, temporal adjuncts and grammatical person. The association of the variables was analyzed through bivariate and trivariate crosses and, finally, a logistic model was carried out. This analysis allowed us to verify that the written language maintains the preference of [-RÁ] to refer to the future while in orality the reference to the future is expressed by [IR + a + Inf]. This distribution is also correlated with the fact that, in the oral language, the form [-RÁ] is used only as an uncertainty operator.

Keywords : Futurity; uncertainty; variation; Uruguayan Spanish.
