Abstract
CURBELO OTEGUI, María Noel. A tour of your hips. Dancing reggaeton in a women’s gym in Montevideo. Rev. urug. Antropología y Etnografía [online]. 2023, vol.8, n.1, e830. Epub June 01, 2023. ISSN 2393-7068. https://doi.org/10.29112/ruae.v8i1.1830.
Zumba classes and the practice of dancing reggaeton seem to gain a sense of resistance and flight from the domestic spaces of care and upbringing of women who attend a gym exclusively for women, as well as a strong appropriation of a place of autonomy and eroticism away from the male gaze. With that rhythm that is heard wherever we go, I danced with them two hours a week for almost two years as part of an ethnography in a women's gym in a neighborhood considered popular in western Montevideo.
Surrounded by mirrors, we looked at each other on television. The living room as a capsule of colors in a time defined in rhythm and a space of wiggles all the way down in the square that our bodies occupy. In them, also the lives, the work, the family, the care, the meals, the aesthetic appreciations and the sense of this dance that manages to bother in its forms, in its lyrics, in its way but that allows to uncover something. Something about the hips that is not care, reproduction, upbringing. Something that is transgressed with his perreo. A source of energy, a recharge, a space and time of their own.
