Summary Whopping cough is an infectous disease caused by Bordetella pertussis and Parapertussis. The main reservoir of Bordetella are adolescents and adults. Infants younger than 6 months have increased risk for developing a severe illnes with a lethal evolution. Hemolytic uremic syndrome is an unusual complication of whopping cough. The pathogenic mechanisms have not been clarified. One of the hypothesis has established the role of Bordetella toxins and inflammatory mediators. There are few cases published of hemolytic uremic syndrome associated to whopping cough and risk factors for its development have not been established. In the present article we report the case of a breastfeeding who developed an acute renal failure secondary to a hemolytic uremic syndrome during the hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit.
