BAZZINO, Fernando et al. Prevalencia de plaquetopenia en niños infectados con el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana en un Centro de Referencia . Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2012, vol.83, n.3, pp.165-169. ISSN 1688-1249.

Summary  Haematological abnormalities are common in HIV infected children; thrombocytopenia is one of them. The aim of the study was to analyze the number of children infected with HIV who had thrombocytopenia and secondarily warn of the need to raise HIV before a child is presented with this alteration. Material and methods: retrospective analysis of medical records of children infected with HIV who had less than 100.000 platelets/mm³ in two separate blood counts for at least 30 days. Were classified according to the evolution of new onset thrombocytopenia in persistent and chronic. Results: 15 (8%) of 183 HIV-infected children had thrombocytopenia at some point in their evolution. All were infected mother to child transmission. 10 (67%) had thrombocytopenia chronic course and 5 (33%) of acute. Thrombocytopenia in two children was the sign that allowed the diagnosis of HIV in two the diagnosis of infection was made years after the thrombocytopenia. In no case a myelogram was performed; treatments were varied. No patient had refractory thrombocytopenia. Conclusions: 8% of HIV-infected patients presented with thrombocytopenia. In two of the 15 debut was as PTA and was diagnosed with HIV and other two was the initial manifestation of the disease. The authors suggest the need to think about HIV before a child with PTA.
