BARREIRO, Gonzalo et al. Consumo de sustancias psicoactivas: estudio comparativo entre anestesiólogos e internistas en Uruguay. Anest Analg Reanim [online]. 2001, vol.17, n.1, pp.20-25. ISSN 1688-1273.
Introduction: In repeated international reports anesthesiologists are presented as a risk population for psychoactive drugs consumption and addiction. Our goal was to make a pilot research concerning the possible problem in Uruguay, comparing anesthesiologists and internists. Material and method: A simultaneous and anonymous survey was done exploring the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, tranquillizers, amphetamines, opioids and cocaine. Results: 26% (n=29) of anesthesiologists answered affirmatively at least one of the questions addressed to explore alcohol abuse, with a statistical difference with internists (8%, n=11). The possibility of alcohol problematic use was present in 13% of anesthesiologists and in 7% of internists. The other consumptions showed tendency to be greater among anesthesiologists. Conclusions: our research suggests that there are more problems related to alcoholism and other psychoactive substances among anesthesiologists compared with internists. This research must be the beginning of an organic and interdisciplinary approach to this problem
