Introduction:
catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) is the most frequent hospital infection in pediatric intensive care units and it is the most common cause of hospital bacteremia.
Objective:
calculate the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infection in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Pereira Rossell Children Hospital.
Methods:
we carried out a retrospective and descriptive study as of June 1st, 2016 and until 1000 days of catheterization. We included all children hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit who had a central catheter inserted. Clinical data was obtained from their Health Medical Records.
Results:
117 children participated in the study. They received a total of 134 central catheters during 1028 catheterization days. Only one case of catheter-related bloodstream infection was reported from a peripheral inserted central venous catheter. The catheter-related incidence density was of 0.97 cases per 1000 catheterization days.
Conclusions:
the catheter-related incidence of bloodstream infection in pediatric ICUs is lower than the levels reported in 2010 and in 2013.
